Hi all,
Just wanted to let you that I finally made it back home to Valdez, Alaska. Driving 3300 miles from Minnesota is a LOOONNGG drive. Ran into a little snow in North Dakota and Montana, but otherwise the weather was good until Northern British Columbia. From there on in, we ran into some winter weather, but nothing too serious. It feels good to be home again!
I’m playing catchup and getting back into the swing of things. Within the next few days, be looking for pictures and highlights of my drive up the Alcan. Just a little trivia for you: The term “Alcan” is actually the military acronym for the highway. While still commonly used, the official name is the “Alaska Highway.” I tend to hear and use the term “Alcan” most of the time.
If you are planning a drive to Alaska, I highly recommend you get a copy of the Milepost. This is an annual publication that comes out every March. Besides the main route, there are several alternate routes for many parts of the way, especially lower Canada. The Milepost details all these routes and shows you the major attractions, services and stops along the way. I was checking the Milepost frequently to see what was coming up, how far to next town, where we had to get gas, where the next open park was, etc. As you get further North, services really are few and far between. It’s even worse during the off season. Don’t drive to Alaska without a copy of the Milepost.
Stay tuned for lots of exciting stuff!
